In a world that increasingly seeks connection, artist Cheng Tsung FENG’s Meeting Dome acts as both a sculptural statement and a deeply human vision. Located in Fugang, Taoyuan, Taiwan, the piece reimagines the simple Taiwanese bamboo chair — a common object once vital to neighborhood life — transforming its traditional woven seat into a large spherical structure that symbolizes memory, craftsmanship, and collective belonging.

Artist Cheng Tsung FENG’s practice often explores traditional handicraft cultures, drawing inspiration from fading artisanal techniques and everyday life. For this project, he turned to the traditional bamboo chair, a familiar object in Taiwanese neighborhoods, and reimagined the weaving technique of its seat to create a large-scale spherical installation in Fugang, Taoyuan. The work evokes the relaxed, communal atmosphere of the past, when neighbors would pull out bamboo chairs and gather together for conversation in the streets, under the shade of trees or in quiet alleyways.

Rooted in fading artisanal traditions, the installation recalls a time when communities gathered effortlessly, pulling their bamboo chairs into shared spaces beneath open skies, where conversation flowed and human connection was simple and immediate. Through this large-scale woven form, Cheng Tsung FENG revives not only a traditional technique but also the spirit of togetherness embedded within it.

In this installation, FENG amplifies and extends the weaving pattern of the bamboo chair seat. Thin bamboo strips are arranged in parallel layers, forming a continuous woven surface that winds through a large hexagonal metal sphere. Bamboo, a warm and tactile material, intertwines with the rational, structural logic of metal, creating forms that resemble the Chinese character for “person” (人).

The open lattice structure keeps the space permeable from all sides, allowing visitors to move freely, gather, and interact. Overlapping bamboo panels produce intricate patterns of light and shadow, offering cool, dappled shade beneath the sphere.

Inside the installation, a variety of handcrafted bamboo stools are arranged at different heights and in groups, some clustered in twos or threes around the central planting of local Taoyuan vegetation. This spatial arrangement encourages visitors to pause, rest, and engage with the environment. The experience recalls the rhythms of traditional village life, where people would sit in informal arrangements—under a tree, at the doorway, along narrow lanes—sharing stories, laughter, and simple moments of leisure.

Through this work, FENG transforms a humble, utilitarian object into a monumental architectural experience, merging craft, memory, and communal interaction. The bamboo sphere becomes a space for reflection, social engagement, and tactile exploration, bridging the past and the present while celebrating the poetic qualities embedded in everyday life.
