Snøhetta has been selected to design the main art museum for the Qiantang Bay Future Headquarters project in Xiaoshan District, Hangzhou. Their winning design highlights the site’s stunning location overlooking both the waterfront and the city skyline. It also reflects the concept of Time and its connection to the Arts. The design represents Art and Cultural waves and movements, portraying the museum as a gateway for imagination where nature and art come together.

The 18,000 m² landmark is part of Hangzhou’s ambitious downtown development along the Qiantang River. Located at the meeting point of the Qiantang River and the Central Water Axis with nearby metro access, the art museum offers a stunning vantage point with sweeping views across both waterways. Snøhetta draws inspiration from the waterways’ fluidity, creating a lively corridor of creativity and art that stretches from the district’s Central Water Axis cultural center to the Qiantang River through a unique gateway, revitalizing Hangzhou’s future.

Inspired by the flowing shapes and connective role of a bridge, the building features two wave-like forms. This lively arrangement brings all circulation pathways together at a central hub and creates a lively public space. The rolling landscape, reminiscent of tidal rhythms, leads visitors on an exploratory path toward the gateway at the site’s center and up to a rooftop terrace offering panoramic views of the river and city, fostering community between the two waterways.

The main highlight is the winding pathways that integrate the landscape into the space. To the north, leisurely promenades wind through picturesque riverscapes to reach the rooftop skyline. To the east, bridge-style walkways connect the urban environment with the art museum, enabling visitors to ascend gradually toward the sky and water.

At ground level, the central Gateway functions as a spatial and symbolic connector, drawing people toward the Qiantang riverfront and inviting them to pause, reflect, and celebrate its majestic presence. Inside, the main exhibition halls are positioned at the core, surrounded by ample public spaces for socializing, education, exchange, and community gatherings.
