As an art exhibition and museum, we can’t say enough about teamLab Biovortex Kyoto, a permanent art museum created by the art collective teamLab, which opened in Minami-ku, Kyoto, as part of the Kyoto Station Southeast Area Project on October 7, 2025. Located within walking distance of Kyoto Station, this museum will be teamLab’s largest exhibition in Japan, spanning over 10,000 square meters.

Featuring more than 50 artworks, including Massless Amorphous Sculpture, which has never been exhibited in Japan, based on Environmental Phenomena, a concept explaining how the environment causes artworks to exist. Other displays include the newly unveiled Megaliths, Transient Abstract Life and Return, as well as Athletics Forest, a complex, multi-dimensional creative athletic space, and Future Park, a collaborative space for co-creation, all part of teamLab’s educational projects.

In the darkness, the flowers shine brightly from deep within their existence. The flowers repeat the cycle of life and death, changing with the seasons and influenced by the flow of time and human intervention. The pictorial space created by the flowers is a cognitive space. Additionally, the space created by the flowers’ radiance is not an illusion; it is a bodily experience. Here, the pictorial space is drawn through Ultrasubjective Space, thereby restoring bodily freedom. As these two kinds of space overlap, this bodily pictorial world comes into being.

The pictorial space of the flowers, created through Ultrasubjective Space, differs from a picture plane flattened by a lens or single-point perspective. In images or paintings made with a lens or single-point perspective, space appears behind the picture plane; the space that opens there and the space the viewer inhabits are separate, and the picture plane acts as a boundary surface. The viewpoint is fixed at a single point, and the body disappears. A picture plane formed by Ultrasubjective Space isn’t a boundary that separates us from the artwork’s world.

The artwork’s world isn’t outside a window; it feels like a seamless, continuous space connected to the viewer without boundaries. Any position—front, back, left, or right—can serve as a perspective, providing endless viewpoints and allowing the viewer to regain bodily freedom. Instead of being fixed at one point, the viewer can move freely, letting their gaze explore and reframe the artwork’s universe as it evolves over time, creating a floral pictorial space within themselves. This transforms the piece into a subjective, embodied spatial experience where the viewer moves through and interacts with the pictorial environment.

This project, partnering with Kyoto and Osaka companies, develops a facility on city land near Kyoto Station’s southeast. It aims to be a “creative hub for producing and sharing new value,” featuring a cultural space with teamLab’s art museum, an art center, and other attractions.

Through this project, teamLab aims to support Kyoto City’s vision for urban development in the Kyoto Station Southeast Area, centered around culture, art, and youth.
As of February 19, 2026, teamLab Biovortex Kyoto has welcomed over 500,000 visitors, just five months after its grand opening. Many international visitors come from distant countries like the United States, Australia, Canada, and Germany to experience these beautiful exhibitions.
