The Art of Rarity: Nick Holland on Belle Montagne and the Beauty of Wine
Nick Holland’s story is one of transformation—of turning vision into legacy, precision into artistry and leadership into a pursuit of beauty. For decades, he shaped the world of finance and gold mining, orchestrating billion-dollar strategies and defining the course of one of the world’s top gold producers. But beyond the boardrooms and mines, a quieter passion called to him—one rooted in the land, in craftsmanship and in the exquisite pleasure of a perfectly balanced vintage.
Now, with the launch of Belle Montagne, Holland has traded the shimmer of gold for the golden hues of a finely aged cuvée, bringing his signature blend of strategic mastery and appreciation for excellence to the world of ultra-luxury wines.

Perched in the heart of the Franschhoek Valley, located in the Cape Winelands region of the Western Cape of South Africa, a place where rolling vineyards meet the artistry of winemaking, Belle Montagne is more than a wine—it is a testament to rarity, refinement and revelation.
Limited to just 500 memberships worldwide, this is South Africa’s most exclusive private wine club, designed for collectors who appreciate not just exceptional vintages but the sensory and aesthetic experience that comes with them.

WiB – After decades as a leader in gold mining, what was the defining moment that made you pivot to fine wine? Was there a particular bottle or experience that sparked this transition?
Nick Holland – Yes, travels abroad with my wife allowed us to experience premium wines whilst dining in Michelin star and similar-style fine dining restaurants, where the foundation of my deep appreciation for the best wines began.

WiB – Was wine or a deep connection to nature and the land a part of your upbringing? How did your childhood shape your appreciation for craftsmanship and excellence?
Nick Holland – As a schoolboy, I did a project on wine production as the subject fascinated me, especially as I’m from a wine-producing country like South Africa, but in particular, the magic of the metamorphosis from grapes to crafted and aged vintages, even though, of course, I was not old enough to discover the taste.

WiB – Looking back, is there something your younger self would be surprised to know about where you’ve ended up? What wisdom would you share with him now?
Nick Holland – Have a vision and drive to achieve one’s dreams no matter what and never give up on the quest.

WiB – Many people associate fine wine with France or Italy. What do you wish more people knew about the artistry, terroir and potential of South African wines?
Nick Holland – South Africa has not done nearly enough to promote the best South African wines abroad, probably because of the fragmentation of the industry and the lack of leadership and public-private partnerships. We already compete with the best. With South African wine more in vogue than ever on the global landscape, there is an excellent opportunity to reposition the best we have to the most discerning global critics, avid collectors and wine aficionados.

WiB – Belle Montagne is positioned as an ultra-luxury offering. What makes your wines stand out in the global market? Is it the land, the winemaking philosophy, or something else?
Nick Holland – Belle Montagne is synonymous with South African excellence in every aspect of its value chain, from the selection of fruits, its careful blend of new and aged French oak, the care in the wine-making process, the ageing of the wines in the barrel and the detail of the bottle and packaging that complements the quality of each vintage. In short, every aspect must clearly articulate the manifest care and attention to quality.

WiB – For those who don’t yet know about Belle Montagne, how would you describe the experience of tasting one of your wines for the first time? What do you want them to feel?
Nick Holland – Our wines are designed to be appealing to all our senses from the nose to the palate and the finish, with each stage appreciated by the most demanding of connoisseurs; in particular, the winemaking process has achieved a careful balance between acidity, tannins and sweetness to provide a complex but smooth finish.

WiB – You’re creating more than just wine; you’re curating a lifestyle. What does the Belle Montagne experience offer beyond the bottle?
Nick Holland – This wine is a representation of a lot more than a luxury brand. The wine offers luxury, excitement and uniqueness. It will create the desire to own it not just for its quality as a wine but also because of its allure, rarity and exclusivity. While many other products in this space boast years of heritage to define their provenance, Belle Montagne represents something incredibly important: the provenance of African excellence, an example of the very best of South Africa created with detail at par with the best in the world.

WiB – If you could have anyone in the world—past or present—share a bottle of Belle Montagne, who would it be and why?
Nick Holland – Pascal Aussignac. Pascal is the Head Chef at Michelin-star restaurant Club Gascon in London, UK. His passion for exceptional wines to accompany exceptional food excites me.
His floral arrangements in the restaurant are without equal. He sources the flowers and plants very early every morning and designs and makes them personally. I was amazed when he told Roslyn (my wife) and me the story. He is a true artist in all he touches.

WiB – If you had to pair one of your wines with an unforgettable moment in life—a celebration, an achievement or a reflection—what would it be and why?
Nick Holland – My silver anniversary with Roslyn, who has been my advisor, confidant and inspiration along the remarkable journey of achieving what has been achieved with our wines.

WiB – Can you recall the exact moment you tasted a wine that changed everything for you? What was it, and how did it shape your vision for Belle Montagne?
Nick Holland – A white Burgundy in a restaurant in Paris. I felt we should strive for that from our terroirs in South Africa and saw no reason why that pinnacle in wine could not be reached or surpassed.

WiB – Has your experience in gold mining influenced your approach to building a luxury brand? Are there parallels between searching for gold and crafting fine wine?
Nick Holland – Gold is finite, rare and unique. Nothing quite compares to it in terms of what it signifies and has represented through the ages. Gold has an allure and beauty that is enduring. The most exceptional wines have similar properties in that they are limited and exclusive, appealing and sought after.
From the shimmer of gold to the deep, luminous glow of a glass of Belle Montagne, Nick Holland’s journey is a reminder that life’s finest treasures are not merely found—they are crafted, savored, and shared.
