When Trees Glow: From countryside frost to city streets, how illumination awakens nature and the spirit

The changing colors of trees always symbolize autumn, so what better tribute than to showcase their beauty with lights? In winter, when daylight shortens and the world seems to exhale into stillness, light becomes something we feel rather than see. It softly rests on frozen branches, spills from windows onto quiet streets, and reminds us that illumination is as emotional as it is physical.

In teamLab’s Resonating Trees, this feeling comes alive—each tree glows in shifting shades, responding to movement and presence, as if nature itself breathes light back into the darkness. Whether in the peaceful countryside or beneath the city’s pale glow, this gentle radiance sparks a shared joy: a reminder that even in winter’s quiet, the world continues to resonate with life, color, and connection.

teamLab Botanical Garden Osaka transforms into an autumn landscape. An artwork featuring brightly shining cosmos will be displayed from October 31 to November 23. The garden will also participate again in the “Festival of the Lights in OSAKA 2025.” The nighttime open-air museum, teamLab Botanical Garden Osaka, by the art collective teamLab, is now becoming a scene of autumn scenery.

Additionally, the capillaris in Field of Light Color – Muhlenbergia Capillaris are currently turning pink. From mid to late November, the bald cypress in Life is Continuous Light – Bald Cypress and Resonating Trees – Formosan Gum will also fully transform into autumn foliage.

The cypresses at the entrance of Nagai Botanical Garden sparkle beautifully as you pass by. Each time someone walks past, the trees seem to glow even brighter and emit a warm tone. This light gently radiates out, inspiring neighboring cypresses to resonate with the same gentle tone. If a wave of light comes from the opposite side, it signals that people are nearby. Overall, this creates a wonderful sense of connection and awareness of others sharing the space.

Resonating Trees, an art collective, connects people and animals when they come near the trees; the trees glow and produce a gentle tone. As with the other themes, this light and sound then softly spread out, one after another, to the trees nearby. If a wave of light reaches from afar, it suggests that people or animals are nearby, which can make them more aware of others around them and of their environment.

What teamLab captures so artistically is that light in nature is never static—it listens, responds, and transforms. In winter, when color retreats from the landscape, even the faintest glow feels heightened: a silver sheen on a frozen lake, the amber flicker of streetlights, the pink breath of dawn against snow. These are not merely scenes to behold but emotions to inhabit. Like the illuminated trees that change hue with each passing presence, winter light shifts with our inner states—it can soothe, awaken, or remind us to look more closely. In this way, Resonating Trees becomes more than an artwork; it is a reflection of nature’s quiet conversation with us, a luminous bridge between solitude and connection.

Perhaps this is the quiet magic of the Autumn/Winter season: it teaches us to see light as presence, not abundance. In the long shadows and muted tones, illumination feels profoundly human — a gesture of hope, a reminder of connection. Whether it glows from the trees of teamLab’s imagined forest or from a single lantern by a frosted window, light becomes our shared language with nature.

It is the pulse between stillness and joy, between what fades and what endures. In every season, but especially in winter, it reminds us that beauty is never lost — it simply changes form and waits to be seen.
