Enjoy the numerous outfit changes and splendor of an Indian wedding.

Growing up in India, I was fortunate to appreciate the beauty of diverse cultures from an early age. Surrounded by incense, colors, flowers, sparkle, and the intricate craftsmanship of exquisite sarees and shawls, I experienced an overwhelming sensory delight in the markets, streets, and rich traditions of Indian culture, filled with ceremonies, festivals, and cultural holidays.

Here, I developed my sense of creativity, inspired by the abundance of shiny, detailed fabrics, especially as they transformed during celebrations and ceremonial festivals. This is why I love Indian weddings; when an acquaintance returned from her sister’s wedding, I eagerly seized the chance to illustrate exactly why the many outfit changes reflect the true beauty in this world and our shared ability to capture it.

Dhruvanshi Patel, the groom’s sister, comments: “The wedding was a magnificent and joyful celebration spanning four days at the Nijanand Resort in Anand, Vadodara, Gujarat, India. During the festivities, there were seven exquisite outfit changes, each tailored to a different occasion, infusing a lively and colorful essence into the event. The bride and groom each had distinct rituals reflecting their traditions, and the ceremonies gracefully honored and merged these customs to commemorate their union.”

Marriage holds great significance in Indian culture. The Vedas, Hindu scriptures, describe it as a sacred, lifelong commitment that connects two souls. This union is considered the strongest of social bonds, symbolizing the start of a shared life. Wedding ceremonies include prayers, invocations, and the recitation of vows.

Gujarat is renowned for its folk dances, and folklore plays a vital role in Gujarati culture. The folktales of Kankavati are inherently religious, emerging from the everyday human experience and sometimes diverging from traditional scriptures. These tales are integral to Hindu rituals and customs surrounding marriage, baby showers, naming ceremonies, harvests, and funerals. They are not only religious acts but also reflect the lived experiences of people in both rural and urban communities.
