Edelweiss is a mountain flower belonging to the daisy or sunflower family. It thrives in rocky limestone areas at elevations around 1,800–3,400 meters (5,900–11,200 feet). Its leaves and flowers are densely covered with hairs, offering protection from cold, dryness, and ultraviolet radiation.
This rare, short-lived flower appears in remote mountain regions and symbolizes rugged beauty and purity, especially in the Alps and Carpathians. It is a national icon in Bulgaria, Austria, Slovenia, Switzerland, and Italy. In Romania, it was designated a “monument of nature” in 1931. Edelweiss Day is observed on March 5. According to folk tradition, giving this flower to someone represents a promise of devotion.
