Designers Guild Autumn/Winter 2025 Trevenna collection is inspired by the magical, mythical beauty of Cornwall in Great Britain’s Southwest, specifically influenced by the work of The St Ives School of artists. Inspired by the dramatic region of Cornwall—a land of myths and legends—surrounded by water with rugged coastlines, moors, heathlands, ancient wooded valleys, rolling hills, and meadows—it’s a land of extraordinary rugged beauty, rich in minerals, wildlife, and nature.

At the western tip, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and facing north and south, St. Ives has a unique geographic position and benefits from remarkable light, attracting artists and craftspeople for centuries. In the 1940s, it became a hub for modern and abstract British art with The St Ives School. Led by Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson, this movement was groundbreaking and significant.

The St Ives School refers to artists in St Ives, Cornwall, especially after WWI, though activity began in the late 19th century. The town became popular after the Great Western Railway extension in 1877. Artists like Whistler, Sickert, and Mempes arrived in 1884. The Sloop Inn was a favorite spot for Victorian artists like Louis Grier, whose works were often displayed there. Olsson and Grier opened the first art school in 1888, later joined by Talmage at ‘The Cabin.’ Barlow moved there in 1892, and Dow in 1894, joining the St Ives Art Club.
