Nature, Beauty, History – Protect nature, beauty and history in towns, cities, villages and the countryside.

The National Trust United Kingdom is a favorite heritage and nature conservation charity and membership organization, especially during the holiday season. It was founded in 1895 by Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Hardwicke Rawnsley to “promote the permanent preservation for the benefit of the Nation of lands and tenements (including buildings) of beauty or historical interest.” It has since been given statutory powers, starting with the National Trust Act 1907, and is a national treasure in the United Kingdom and worldwide.

Beautiful examples of the National Trust’s work can be found in places like Batemans, once the home of author Rudyard Kipling, which is celebrated for stories like The Jungle Book and Rikki-Tikki Tavi.

Built-in 1634, this Jacobean house is in the Sussex countryside. When Kipling saw Bateman’s, it was the retreat he had sought from the outside world. He set about enhancing the garden by making an orchard, planting yew hedges and creating a kitchen garden within the walls of what is known as the Mulberry Garden – because of the tree Kipling planted there. Kipling designed the rose garden by the lily pond. His drawings and belongings are on display in the house.

A quote by the founder, Octavia Hill, says it all: “We all want quiet. We all want beauty… We all need space. Unless we have it, we cannot reach that sense of quiet in which whispers of better things come to us gently: Octavia Hill, Co-founder of the National Trust.
